FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What does it mean to vectorize an image?
Vectorizing turns a pixel image into shapes made of paths and curves. A vector stays sharp at any size, while a pixel image blurs when you enlarge it.
What is the difference between PNG and SVG?
PNG is a pixel format and SVG is a vector format. SVG describes shapes, so it scales without losing sharpness. SVG suits logos and icons, PNG suits photos.
Why would I use DXF?
DXF is a drawing format that CAD, CNC and laser software can read. It stores outlines in real units, so a machine can cut the shape at the right size.
How do I set the size in millimetres?
Enter the width you want in the DXF width field. The height follows from the image proportions, and the file is written in millimetres.
Does it work for photos or only for logos?
Logos, icons and line art vectorize best because they have clear edges and few colours. Photos can be traced, but they create thousands of shapes and large files.
How many colours can the result have?
In Logo mode you choose between 2 and 16 colours. Auto mode finds a small palette by itself, and Color mode keeps many shades.
Is my image private?
Yes. The image is traced in your browser and is never uploaded. We use cookie-less analytics that count events such as downloads, never your files.
What are the limits?
Files can be up to 15 MB in PNG, JPG, WEBP, BMP or GIF. Larger images are scaled down to 4096 px on the long side before tracing, and we tell you. Animated GIFs use their first frame.
Is it really free?
Yes. Converting and downloading is free, with no watermark and no account. Paid extras for CNC and laser work may come later.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. Tap the drop area to choose a picture or file on your phone. Large images may trace more slowly on older devices.
How do I open the result in Illustrator or Inkscape?
Open the SVG with File > Open. Each colour area is a separate path that you can edit, recolour or delete.
Will the DXF open in LightBurn or Fusion 360?
DXF R12 is a basic format that most programs read. We check our files with the ezdxf library, but we cannot test every program, so verify the scale before you cut.
What do the modes Auto, Color, Black & white and Logo mean?
Auto chooses for you. Black & white traces two tones, Logo reduces the image to a few flat colours, and Color keeps shades for photos and detailed art.
Why does the result include a background shape?
A traced image has a shape for its background, too. When you export a DXF, tick Leave out the background shape so it is not cut or engraved.
